The Varsity Gay League (VGL), with the help of donations from L.A. City Councilmember Paul Koretz and the Los Angeles Dodgers raised $16,000 on Gay Pride weekend to be used to improve security at Poinsettia Park.

The money, which exceeded VGL’s initial goal of $10,000 was donated to the Los Angeles Parks Foundation c/o Poinsettia Parks Friends. VGL used its annual DragBall tournament to promote the charity.

The two squads joined forces to raise money for the AIDS Food Store in Long Beach. Ben Cary and Erik Legler started the Kicks & Giggles project through the Varsity Gay League.

One of the easiest ways I made friends was by joining Varsity Gay League, an LGBTQ-inclusive weekend kickball league… I wouldn't have believed you if you told me that four months would be enough time to find friends I adore, a roommate I'm obsessed with, someone to fall in love with, someone to break my heart, and oodles of cliché Cali drama to get swept up in — but I'd have been wrong.

Varsity Gay League will be honored during pregame ceremonies with a Dodgers Community Hero Award. Hackner founded Varsity Gay League in 2007 and it has since grown into an organization reaching the LGBT community in 13 cities across eight states with over 15,000 members.

I was the weird kid. I was small. I played video games. I was in theater. I loved horror movies, and comic books, and toys, and games. I was hyperactive, clever, social awkward, fashionably confused and for all 80’s statuses, a nerd.

The inaugural watching party, sponsored by L.A.’s Varsity Gay League, invited football fans from all over town to cheer on the L.A. Chargers as they took on the New England Patriots. 

When I left NYC for life in a small beach community on the Jersey Shore, however, being part of Varsity Gay League's teams was among the things I missed most.

It was a balmy Wednesday evening when I dropped in on the Varsity Gay League’s (VGL) kickball scrimmage in Poinsettia Park in West Hollywood. The middle school memories were just flooding back—similar rules as baseball, a large ball that doesn’t hurt as much when you catch with your face—when I was enthusiastically greeted by a VGL staff member who asked me to sign a wavier before practice. Oh no, I said. I was just there to get an idea of what goes on there.
